Dr Jennifer Judd BVMS GCertSAUA MANZCVS (Small Animal Radiology)

SA Veterinary Sonography is dedicated to providing a high quality and convenient first-opinion mobile ultrasound service to veterinary clinics across Adelaide and other parts of South Australia. We use a state of the art Mindray 9 ultrasound system to deliver exceptional diagnostic images.

So what are the benefits of using SA Veterinary Sonography?

  • Your patients are able to receive a comprehensive ultrasound examination using top-level equipment at their local clinic.

  • The primary clinician can continue to manage the patient in-house, thereby reducing stress to owner and patient while maintaining continuity of care. This is especially important for sick and surgical patients who may be unable to travel.

  • There is zero conflict of interest.

  • There are no additional consultation fees for the client.

  • Every effort will be made to see emergency patients on the same day.

  • A verbal report will be given on the day and a comprehensive report including digital images will be sent via email within 24 hours.

  • Discussion of cases is welcomed.

Abdominal ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound is a non-invasive test used to evaluate the abdominal organs including the liver, biliary system, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, adrenal glands, gastrointestinal tract and urogenital systems. It can also be used to detect the presence of fluid or inflammation within the abdomen and assess the abdominal vasculature and lymph nodes. A complete and systematic abdominal ultrasound is performed in all patients and a detailed report will be delivered to the primary veterinarian.

TISSUE SAMPLING AND CENTESIS

Fine needle aspiration involves using a small gauge needle to collect tissue cells from an organ, tumour or mass within the abdomen. The cells are then smeared onto a slide and sent to a pathologist for interpretation. Abdomino/thoracocentesis involves removing fluid from the abdomen or chest usually for theraputic pruposes and also to enable diagnostic fluid analysis. The use of ultrasound is important as it allows visualisation of the needle thereby increasing the diagnostic accuracy while also reducing the risk of trauma to surrounding structures.

Thoracic ultrasound

Thoracic ultrasound is a non-invasive test used to evaluate the thoracic organs. It can be used alongside thoracic radiographs to aid in the diagnosis of pulmonary disease, mediastinal, cardiac and pulmonary tumours, as well as the detection of pleural and pericardial effusions.

pregnancy diagnosis

Pregnancy ultrasound is a safe and accurate method of diagnosing pregnancy, in addition to assessing gestational age and fetal viability. Most pregnancy ultrasounds are performed at day 25-35, however detection may be as early as 10 days post-mating. It is important to bear in mind that ultrasound cannot give an accurate fetal count.

Urogenital ultrasound is requested in some instances and is specific to the urogenital tracts. Urogenital scans are generally only performed when the clinician is supicious of pyometron (infection within the uterus) or diseases specific to the urinary tract such as bladder stones. It is important to bear in mind that pathology elsewhere in the abdomen may not be detected without a comprehensive abdominal ultrasound. A complete abdominal ultrasound which evaluates all of the abdominal organs is always preferable.

Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram is performed to evaluate the heart. Its main indications are assessment of congenital and acquired heart disease, cardiac function and checking for pericardial effusions and neoplasia. Due to the complexity of cardiac ultrasound, referral to a cardiology or medicine specialist may be recommended.
